Review of Process, Object, Intuition cd from March 2000 issue

by Alan Cummings

A founder member of power electronics unit ConDemek, Catera has stepped neatly around the limitations of playing with himself by designing some software to sample and randomly mutate his guitar playing. Technological mediation thus allows Catera to accompany an unpredictable and intuitive mirror reflection of himself. Methodology aside, the end product is mostly a densely layered an uncompromisingly noisy spew. Played with an acoustic guitar and cigarette lighter slide ILAL shimmers and rises with the unearthy grace of an electric hurdy gurdy. Two of the tracks incorporate premature endings caused by Catera's computer crashing while processing his sounds-the cyber equivalent of "musical differences" perhaps?
